Released in 1996 through Gimisum Productions, Skimask Troopaz is widely regarded as one of the most influential underground Memphis rap tapes of the era. The group consists of KillaMac, Playa Dre, Redrum, & So Serious. This tape also features Gimisum artists Mistermeanor, Z-Dogg, Big Hill, A.K., Snyper, and others. The Skimask Troopaz became known for their rapid-fire delivery, dark production, and energetic style that set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Their unique approach quickly caught on throughout Memphis, inspiring countless local rappers to imitate their fast-paced flows. Among their biggest admirers was a young Yo Gotti, whose 1996 debut cassette clearly reflected the influence of the Skimask Troopaz’ style. Although their original run was relatively short, the group’s impact on Memphis rap was significant, helping shape the sound of a new generation of artists that followed.
