This release is essentially an unofficial producer collaboration between DJ Livewire and Tommy Wright III. Two figures who would have very public, on-record beef, Which started with this tape. According to long-standing lore, Hardcore Montana allegedly took master instrumental tracks from DJ Livewire’s Volume #5 and Volume #6 sessions without permission. Those beats were then repurposed to create this solo project, which was released and distributed through Street Smart Records, Tommy Wright III’s label. The timing lines up closely with the rollout of DJ Livewire’s Volume #6. What adds fuel to the story is Hardcore Montana’s absence from Volume #6, despite having multiple verses on Volume #5. Many believe the falling-out had already occurred by that point, effectively cutting Hardcore out of Livewire’s later projects. From there, the rivalry escalated and eventually spilled into music, interviews, and long-running Memphis rap mythology. Musically, the tape sits squarely in that dark 1994 Memphis pocket: cold drum programming, stripped-down basslines, and heavy Tommy Wright III involvement throughout. Whether viewed as a street classic, a bootleg power move, or a betrayal, Shit Is On remains a key artifact in understanding the fractures within the Memphis underground.
