Tommy Wright III – Runnin’ N Gunnin’ (1995)

Recorded between 1994 and 1995, according to Tommy Wright III himself. This was promoted as “the first ever 90-minute tape.” In reality it runs closer to 80 minutes, but regardless of the exact length, this is still a classic and one of the most ambitious releases of the mid-90s Memphis era. Runnin’ N Gunnin’ feels like a full street report rather than a standard solo tape. The sound is cold and raw, with minimal polish and a heavy emphasis on realism. Instead of nonstop solo cuts, the tape leans hard into posse tracks and collaborations, giving it a crew-based feel that captures how active and interconnected the scene was at the time. There’s a strong sense of escalation throughout the tape, moving from gritty street narratives into darker, more paranoid territory by the end. Tracks like “Ten Wanted Men” and “Runnin’ N Gunnin’” feel especially important, not just for their length and lineup, but for how they document the environment these artists were operating in.
