Lil Gin – Shake Junt (1995)

Recorded between 1994–1995 and released while Lil Gin was only around 13–14 years old, Shake Junt is one of the most shocking and historically significant tapes to come out of Memphis. The age alone puts this release in a category of its own, especially considering how dark and street-oriented the material is. Production duties are split between MVP, DJ Paul, and Juicy J, giving the tape a balanced mix of raw Monsta Klikk-style aggression and classic early Three 6 atmosphere. Skinny Pimp plays a major role throughout the project, both vocally and thematically, helping anchor Lil Gin’s presence and making the tape feel connected to the larger Memphis ecosystem at the time. As well as writing most of the hooks and verses for Lil Gin on this album.  Despite its short runtime, Shake Junt is relentless. There’s very little filler, and the transitions between sides keep the energy tight and focused. It’s not just a novelty record because of Lil Gin’s age—it stands on its own as a grimy, uncompromising snapshot of mid-90s Memphis rap culture.
