Released in May of 1995, Murder In Mississippi is a brutally raw Southern underground tape from Tunica, Mississippi based group Killa Thugs. Featuring Haylo who is closely affiliated with Tommy Wright III & DJ Smacks. Haylo is also considered a Ten Wanted Men extra. This tape however was produced by Sir Ken, whose cold, stripped-down production plays a major role in shaping its menacing atmosphere. While often overshadowed by Memphis releases from the same era, this project stands as a grim regional counterpart, channeling the same violent, horrorcore-leaning energy that defined mid-90s underground rap across the South. Sir Ken’s beats rely on minimal drum programming, eerie loops, and an unpolished mix that enhances the tape’s street-level realism rather than smoothing it out. Lyrically, Killa Thugs focus on paranoia, retaliation, and survival, with Haylo acting as the tape’s central presence throughout. Tracks like “Deep Inside The Bottom of The Earth” and “Natural Born Killers” immediately establish the tape’s hostile tone, while “Caught In That Crossfire” and “Three Suspects” reflect the constant threat and consequences of street life. Murder In Mississippi plays like a Southern crime diary. It remains a cult underground release, notable both for its Mississippi origins and its direct connection to the Tommy Wright III movement, documenting how the Memphis style of rap spread beyond the city limit’s during the boom of the underground tape era.
