DJ Muda Fuckin’ Sound – Volume #9 Negative Thoughts (1994)
This tape is widely considered DJ Sound at his absolute peak, and it’s easy to see why it’s often cited as one of the strongest underground Memphis rap releases ever recorded. By late 1994, Sound had fully perfected his production style. Dark, polished, heavy on bass, but still raw enough to feel dangerous. Compared to earlier volumes, Negative Thoughts is a massive leap forward sonically. What really sets this tape apart is how dominant the Frayser Click sounds as a unit. Every member shows up hungry, and there’s a real sense of cohesion and momentum throughout the entire tape. Lil Bay, Dirty Red, Nigga Creep, Bloody Bones, Gangsta Gold, MC Money, Player 1, Lethal Villain, Mad Maine, and D Tha Unknown all deliver standout verses, making this feel less like a DJ compilation and more like a full-on crew statement. Chronologically, this tape drops after Player 1 & Bloody Bones – Ruthless Hustlers and marks the moment where the Frayser Click solidified themselves as one of the most dangerous collectives in Memphis. Production-wise, this is also the foundation Sound would build on for his later volumes. This tape is still my personal all-time favorite underground Memphis rap tape.
