DJ Big Mack – Volume #5 Mafia Style (1994)

This tape sits a little outside the core Frayser Click circle but is still very much connected to it. Mafia Style is essentially a Ridgegrove-side counterpart to DJ Sound’s operation, with several overlapping members and the same raw apartment-complex energy that defined that era. DJ Sound was from Ridgecrest, while Ridgegrove was right next door, and that proximity shows in both personnel and sound. Key Frayser Click affiliates D.O.N. and Full Clip (aka Hype Dog) play major roles throughout the tape, anchoring it with grim street narratives and minimalist, aggressive production. In many ways, this feels like a parallel universe Frayser Click release rather than a completely separate camp. It’s also worth noting that this particular tape is not the true original configuration. The original tape would also include “Project Born & Raised,” “Mo Murder,” “No Remorse,” and a proper Side A Outro, none of which appear here. Sadly, both DJ Big Mack and Full Clip have since passed, which gives this release added historical weight. Despite the flaws of this repress, Mafia Style remains an important document of the Ridgegrove scene and its close relationship to the Frayser Click movement during 1994. Even today, the Ridgecrest & Ridgegrove apartment complexes in Frayser North Memphis still don’t get along. But DJ Sound & DJ Big Mack were able to come together in a time of street war.FUnny enough, DJ Sound has said that Big Mack put “Face To Face With Death” on this tape without his permission, even though they had worked together. This entire tape was recorded entirely at the “Honeycomb Hideout”. Which was the nickname given to DJ Big Mack AKA Fat Mack’s shed in his backyard where all of the Ridgegrove Mafia and DJ Big Mack material was recorded. It was said to have no kind of heat or AC. As the temperatures were always extreme. One last thing, D.O.N. started recording with this group after his fallout with Juicy J between Volume #8 and Volume #9 by Juicy J. As the story goes Homicyde slapped Juicy at Skinny Pimp & Lady Bee’s club in North Memphis and Juicy did nothing to Homicyde. D.O.N. didn’t respect it and parted ways with Juicy shorty after Homicyde left the group in early 1994.
