Dirty Red & Lil Bay – New Cut From Oncoming Tape “Trying To Get In” (1995)

New Cut From Oncoming Tape “Trying To Get In” is a short promotional cassette released in 1995, serving as an early preview of Dirty Red & Lil Bay’s second full project following their work around DJ Sound’s camp. Dropping after DJ Sound – Volume #10 Hatred, this rare tape captures a transitional moment where the duo began shifting toward more self-produced material, stepping away from relying heavily on DJ Sound’s production style. As the story goes Dirty Red got a large sum of money from the city of Memphis in 1995. After suing the Memphis Police Department for wrongdoings & harassment. Dirty Red then used the money for a large and expensive studio which they used for many years on Luciano Crime family & early Yo Gotti tracks. This short tape however would be the first to drop from this new studio they were using. They also did not allow DJ Sound, Player 1 or anyone else really from the Frayser Click in their studio at the time. As they believed they were going to build their own rap empire beginning with “Trying To Get In” released in 1995/1996. Despite its brief runtime, this cassette offers a glimpse into the evolving sound Dirty Red & Lil Bay were developing at the time. Darker mixes, stripped-down arrangements, and a more independent creative direction. Because it functions as a promo rather than a full-length release, copies are extremely scarce, making it an interesting piece of Memphis underground history tied directly to their late-1995 follow-up album.
