Load Up Tha Nine is Criminal E’s second album and released sometime between January – October 1995. During a period when the Memphis underground scene was rapidly expanding through small studio networks and cassette only releases. Produced by FM (Freak Master) & DJ Dizzy D, who is known for his work alongside Al Kapone. Brings the same kind of smooth production on this tape. The album carries a smooth mid-90s street sound rooted in heavy drum programming and straightforward, aggressive delivery. The project blends darker subject matter with moments of cleaner radio-style structure, most notably with the alternate clean version of “Straight Pimpin’.” Tracks like “Sucka Play” and the title cut lean into the raw underground energy typical of the era albeit delivered through a more polished and smooth G-funk synth sound. Which was not typical of other underground releases from Memphis. Though not as widely circulated as some contemporaries, the release stands as a strong example of the different kinds of sounds coming out of Memphis’ independent production circles in the 1990s.
