Black Market Empire – Da Underground Noize (1995)
A highly underrated crew out of North Memphis, Black Market Empire was comprised ofMastermind Mick and Rockmaster Rick. With DJ Flexx & Psycho also handling production on this rare, 30-minute cassette. Released independently with very little surviving documentation, Da Underground Noize feels more like a raw street promo than a formal album. This tape likely served as a lead-in to their later full-length Blow Da Fuck Up, which appears to have dropped sometime in 1996. Sonically, Da Underground Noize sounds much more East Coast Boom Bap in it’s style. Which is somewhat of a refreshment compared to the rest of the hardcode rap coming out of Memphis during this time. While often overlooked, this tape stands as an authentic snapshot of the era and region — raw, uncompromising, and very much of its time.
