Produced primarily by Chaz of ARP and or DJ Scar, Crucifix’s is believed to have been released in early 1996 and serves as the debut release from the 196 Clique. Several clues help narrow down its release window, including the group’s Jordan XI sneakers on the cover, which debuted during the 1995 holiday season, their cold-weather clothing despite Memphis’ typically warm climate, and Killer B’s reference to “for the ’95” on the track “Playa Haters,” suggesting the tape was recorded toward the end of 1995 before being released shortly afterward. The group consists of Lil Bone, Killer B, Lil D, Mr. Lil E, and Lil P, whose dark, aggressive performances are backed by Chaz’s signature production, making this one of the more memorable independent Memphis releases from1996.
