Released in early 1995, Blood In Blood Out marks the first solo tap from Dirty Red & Lil Bay and stands as one of the most unique releases in DJ Sound’s underground discography. Both Dirty Red and Lil Bay are DJ Sound’s cousins, and they were also the first two artists to officially join the Frayser Click. Produced entirely by DJ Sound, the album takes a noticeably smoother and more laid-back approach compared to the aggressive Frayser Click sound heard on Sound’s main volumes. The beats are cleaner and more controlled, showing Sound experimenting with a different atmosphere while still keeping the street edge intact. Lyrically, the tape stays grounded in themes of loyalty, survival, and family ties. Songs like “Blood Is Thicker Than Water” carry extra weight given the real-life bond between the artists and DJ Sound, reinforcing the foundation of what would become one of Memphis rap’s most important collectives. Despite its calmer sound, the album never strays far from the menace Dirty Red was already known for. Overall, Blood In Blood Out is an underrated but essential Memphis Rap release. It’s also important to mention that Mr. Will AKA “Will With All The Skill”. Had actually produced much of DJ Sound’s stuff. Especially Dirty Red & Lil Bay. That is why tracks like “Funky Dope Shit” sound much more different than DJ Sound’s previous work.
