Lil Mac & DJ Trick - Makin’ Love To Money (1995) A Lil Mac & DJ Trick - Makin’ Love To Money (1995) A Tennessee down south classic tape that I rarely see mentioned anywhere. In fact I feel like I may be the only big fan of this release. Regardless, DJ Trick is legend from around Humboldt, TN. His smooth old school production style is definitely on display in this release 🔥 This tape is severely underrated in my opinion. And is a classic that I have never forgotten about. As I still continue to play this junt many years later❗️
Player 1 Tapes (1994-2017) with how much this comm Player 1 Tapes (1994-2017) with how much this community often shits on people like Priest AKA Player 1. I want to take the time to show my personal appreciation for Player 1 myself. Being a founding member of the Frayser Click with DJ Sound. Player 1 has been rapping for an extremely long time. With his first recordings dating back to 1987 at the Trezvant High School talent show 🔥 The reason why so many people find issues with Priest. Is because he seemingly manipulated DJ Sound to make money off his albums through merchandise & represses. In my opinion though, I think this action essentially brought DJ Sound’s name to the underground rap world. Since Sound’s older work, was previously unheard until Player 1 put them out throughout the 2000s. Regardless of your opinion you can’t change the contributions that he provided for music & Memphis Rap as a whole 💯
8Ball & MJG - Lyrics of a Pimp (1992-1997) The ori 8Ball & MJG - Lyrics of a Pimp (1992-1997) The original song that certified 8Ball & MJG as prominent Southern artists was “Listen To The Lyrics” AKA “Lyrics of A Pimp”. The 1991 single was a hit locally and immediately gave the duo some fame in the city. They would of course go on to be one of the most legendary duos in hip hop history. But that song was the one that set them up later. They would rerelease this song and many of their other underground classics on the 1997 reissue 🔥 whichever version you bump, the Memphis pimp culture is strong in their lyrics. And the smoothness of it all still holds up incredibly well even today 💯
DJ Paul & Lord Infamous - Come With Me To Hell Tap DJ Paul & Lord Infamous - Come With Me To Hell Tapes (1994-1995) These two early Three Six Mafia albums in my opinion are the epitome of that Memphis horror sound. Both tapes are basically solo albums for Lord Infamous produced by DJ Paul. These two tapes helped pioneer and develop the dark gritty sound that Memphis became known for🔥 which of these two classics is your favorite??
Radical T - Radical But Critical (1991) An underra Radical T - Radical But Critical (1991) An underrated early Memphis classic I rarely see this release mentioned anywhere online. However its old school funky flavor and hip-hop style makes it extremely unique for Memphis ❗️And of course the early collaborations from legends like Psycho, DJ Zirk & 8Ball make this tape even more of a classic 🔥
DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) B.K. needs & deserves mu DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) B.K. needs & deserves much more credit than what he receives❗️At the start of the Memphis Rap tape scene there were only two DJ’s who were dropping local Mixtapes. With those two of course being: DJ Spanish Fly & DJ B.K. While B.K. Relied more on mixes, break beat, & West Coast tracks. Both his influence on the scene and skills on the turntables cannot go overlooked 🔥 Although he mainly retired from the scene right when it was heating up in 1993. I still play tons of his old school mixtapes. Despite the majority of which being “lost” to time 💯
Legion of Da Lost - Southern Destruction (1999) Th Legion of Da Lost - Southern Destruction (1999) This is a release which I rarely if ever see or hear get mentioned anywhere online. Legion of Da Lost was a very short-lived group which existed only for this one release in 1999. Formed by members of other groups like Ms. Krazy 🕊️ of COTC & Mac Shun of Riverside Click, who also most likely produced the release 🔥. Although I really never see this junt get mentioned anywhere. I still love it for what it is. And perhaps I love it a little bit more just because of that fact 💯
DJ Glock tapes (1995-1996) another producer who is DJ Glock tapes (1995-1996) another producer who is often forgotten about is DJ Glock from Moscow, Tennessee. Obviously inspired by the local Memphis Sound. DJ Glock carved out a name for himself while producing for people like Puppy Dogg. Which imo is also easily his best release 🔥. Although Glock has long been retired. Many of his releases I still play years later💯 It’s just unfortunate that Glock and many artists alike have sold their publishing to the awful Sun City publishing for nickles and dimes. Essentially ruining their legacy as the quality is tampered with and forever altered. Regardless, his few surviving tapes are still classics in my eyes🔊
Hilltop Hustlaz - Mac A Fee (1998) Once again anot Hilltop Hustlaz - Mac A Fee (1998) Once again another very obscure and forgotten about release from an underrated group in Memphis. By the year 1997-1998 the newer generation of young rappers would emerge inspired but the sound of Squeeky and DJ Paul from years prior. While these releases are often more overlooked compared to the 93-96 tapes. I think their more polished production and sound is much more appealing than many others in the scene❗️This tape is still one of my favorite underground tapes. Because of it’s atmospheric synths and catchy hooks 🔥
Black Market Empire Tapes (1994-1995) While I can’ Black Market Empire Tapes (1994-1995) While I can’t confidently pinpoint an exact year for these two releases it was most likely released sometime between 1994-1996. With group members and extra collaborators being Hard D, Flex (maybe DJ Flex), Mastermind Mick, & Rockmaster Rick who likely produced most of their songs with 1-2 other producers 🔥 While I definitely don’t know much about these releases or the group itself. I do know that I love both of these albums, despite them rarely ever getting mentioned 💯
The Family - kickin’ It About The Bricks (1996) An The Family - kickin’ It About The Bricks (1996) Another forgotten about group went simply by the name The Family. They hailed from Blackhaven and had only one release from 1996. While I love this release, the quality online is less than ideal 💯 this is another release that I can’t wait to rip soon 🔥
Hard D Tapes (1995-1998) With so many legends comi Hard D Tapes (1995-1998) With so many legends coming outta Memphis in the 1990s it’s sometimes easy to overlook the acts like Hard D. While he is one of my personal favorites. His music online has been butchered horribly in quality which doesn’t accurately represent how good some of his songs are 💯 From his work with Crucifix, DJ Big Tim, Black Market Empire and his solo work. He is one of the greatest rappers to come from the city in my eyes 🔥
Destion - Light Years Ahead of Ya (1998) With how Destion - Light Years Ahead of Ya (1998) With how revolutionary the Memphis Rap sound was in the 90s it was almost inevitable for acts in other cities to follow this sound. Destion comes from Jackson, TN which was located close enough to Memphis for them to have a similar sound. While this tape is likely not an OG from 1990s Jackson, TN. I still love having this album on cassette 🔥
9 Tra Family (1995) Perhaps the best part about Me 9 Tra Family (1995) Perhaps the best part about Memphis Rap is the variety of different groups there were❗️From Three Six Mafia to Butcher shop and Frayser Click. Every neighborhood had at least one rap group it seemed like. 9 Tra family obviously must have formed some time in 1993 with some of their work presuming to be lost. The two tapes we do have are underground classics and still stand the test of time despite having little to no information on them 🔥
Shot Callers - Tryin To Make It (1997) While this Shot Callers - Tryin To Make It (1997) While this is yet again another tape from 1990s Tennessee. Instead of Memphis this group originates from Jackson, TN. Regardless of where they are from, this one and only release I can find from them is bumping 🔊 Again I don’t know much about this group. But all I know is that it sounds good when Its in my tape deck 🔥
DJ Squeeky Tapes (1992-1996) Once the Hip-Hop scen DJ Squeeky Tapes (1992-1996) Once the Hip-Hop scene in Memphis had been started by people like Spanish Fly. DJ Squeeky would be the first producer to capitalize off this emerging market. His tape mixtape series would gain traction in the city. And before you knew it Squeeky was producing for all the hottest artists in Memphis in the early-mid 90s 🔥 His revolutionary bass and unique sound would influence the entire genre and essentially opened the doors for many other producers in the city.
Tommy Wright III Tapes (1993-1996) TW is one name Tommy Wright III Tapes (1993-1996) TW is one name which has managed to stay relevant for over 30 years. While his underground cassette run in the 1990s was legendary. His popularity in recent years and sudden surge of concerts and performances is what makes TW even more legendary in my opinion 🔥 Not to mention that his 1996 run is one of the best ever single year runs in Memphis history. Such as DJ Paul in 1994. And DJ Squeeky in 1995.
Blackout Tapes (1995-1998) Blackout is definitely Blackout Tapes (1995-1998) Blackout is definitely a fan favorite in the Memphis rap scene❗️He arguably had the darkest and creepiest beats of anyone from the city 🔥 On top of that he did production for the biggest and best Playa Fly songs from back in the 90s. His influence can still be heard today just like many of these artists 💯
K Rock The World (2000) K Rock is another artist f K Rock The World (2000) K Rock is another artist from Memphis who deserves much more praise in the rap scene. As a member of Prophet Posse in the late 90s. K-Rock would record many of his earliest songs with Three Six Mafia. Before leaving the group in about 1999. To sign with Nicky Scarfo Jackson who still owned the rights to the Prophet Posse name. This album would come immediately after that and is still his best in my opinion 🔥 unfortunately K rock would pass away in Prison in 2018. I can still remember the exact moment I hard the news in my 1st period Art class in High School. Rip to both Nick Scarfo and K Rock ❗️
DJ Sound Tapes (1992-2005) DJ Sound is most defini DJ Sound Tapes (1992-2005) DJ Sound is most definitely my favorite underground producer from Memphis❗️I first heard his music on an airplane trip when I downloaded a 2 hour compilation. Since that moment I have been an ultimate DJ Sound fan. I have nearly all his tapes and consider many of these some of the best from the genre🔥
