With how crazily obsessed everyone is with 1990s Black Memphis culture, I rarely see Memphis rap fans mention anything from nowadays. That even includes the recent and unfortunate incident involving DJ Squeeky being shot at a club in Memphis.
As the story goes, it was either January 2023 or 2024 when Criminal Manne convinced Squeeky to accompany him to a club to promote his upcoming single. Although Squeeky was hesitant, he agreed since Criminal Manne promised it would be a quick appearance. Once they arrived and the song was played, Squeeky was chilling, enjoying some of the finest greenery in Memphis (aka a blunt).
Then chaos broke out — a fight started involving a man in the crowd who had brought his girl with him. Once Crim and Squeeky saw this, they understandably decided to dip. But while leaving, presumably that same man — the one who had been beaten in front of his girl — unloaded a switch into the crowd. Unfortunately, Squeeky was hit in the leg while standing next to Criminal Manne.
The police eventually arrived and killed the armed gunman outside the club. They tried convincing Squeeky to wait for the ambulance, but since he knew the hospital was “across the street,” Criminal Manne threw Squeek Dog into his Mustang and ballin’, rushed him straight there.
I saw this as a reminder — or even a wake-up call — about just how bad the gun issue in Memphis has become. It feels like nearly every big social gathering in the city these days is bound to end in gunfire. Thankfully, Squeeky’s doing fine, but it’s sad that a legend like him still has to face this kind of indiscriminate violence in his own city. Much love to everyone — y’all stay safe out there, wherever you’re at!
