Player 1 AKA Priest McCullough and Carlos “DJ Sound” Perry got their start in music alongside each other back in the late 1980s. This would all happen around the year 1987. When both Player 1 and DJ Sound would perform in and win the talent show at Trezvant High School in North Memphis. Sound at this period, provided nothing more than his great beatboxing skills. While Player 1 of course rapped on top of it and performed his signature Gangsta-walk. Before he became known as DJ Sound. He went by both Soundmaster C and Trans Sound C. Player 1 at this time was known by M.C. Ice. An audio recording exists for this talent show & it was later released on cassette by Player 1 in the 2000s, listing the year as 1987. The same year the two had started High School at Trezvant.
Sound didn’t start deejaying local parties until around 1990-1991 when he was about 16. Inspired by local legends such as DJ Spanish Fly, DJ Sound’s first passion was scratching records live. By the time he got his boss Dr-660 and started making beats. People like DJ Paul, Juicy J, and DJ Squeeky had just started gaining traction locally for their mixtapes. Starting in 1992, Sound started putting out his own volumes by mixing other popular rap songs at the time. As well as recording some of his own songs with those who were closest to him. With Sound being the first producer to put on for the North Memphis suburb Frayser. He called his new click of rappers the Frayser Click in about1994. Some of his earliest rappers were his familial cousins Dirty Red, Lil Bay, and D Tha Unknown. As well as his long time friend Player 1, who was also automatically a member. Although, now in a duo with fellow rapper Bloody Bones Aka Player 2.
By the time Volume 3 rolled, around Sound had partnered with local producer DJ Livewire. Who showed Sound the ropes with his Dr-660. In addition to programming the machine for him. After that, Sound would continue to put out mixtape after mixtape. Eventually bringing in anumber of people, sorted into duos. With some of these being: MC Money & Gangsta Gold, Mad Maine & KeeWee, D.O.N. & Full Clip, Lil Yo & G.B., LV & Lil Rob, Dirty Red & Lil Bay, and Player 1 & Player 2. He would continue to release his own volumes in addition to solo tapes for some Frayser Click members. His consistency and unique sound quickly made him one of the go-to producers in the city of Memphis.
Like many others from Memphis. Sound had started drifting away from music around 1997. His Volume 11 Broken Halo album released in 1996, would be his last official recording released. Sound had multiple reasons for quitting music. He had just moved out of his Mom’s house and now had more important responsibilities. He still intended to release his Volume 12. However, DJ Sound apparently lost his original equipment during this time as well. After he lent it out to some of his friends so that they could record their own projects. His cousin Dirty Red, had long left the group after learning how to produce on his own. As well as getting inheritance money from his Grandpa, which he used to fund a brand new expensive studio. Dirty Red would apparently not allow Sound or anyone else to use his studio for their own personal projects. As, Dirty Red was now focusing on releasing his new group called Luciano Crime Family. And with all of that, DJ Sound was essentially done.
While this would be the end of the story for most of the Memphis acts. In the case of DJ Sound & Player 1, this is where it actually starts to get interesting. Player One, a hustler as always. Would not tolerate the sudden-ending of his beloved Frayser Click. He apparently set up a studio identical to DJ Sound and started up a record label called Litegreen Records. Player 1 hooked back up with Sound around 2003. With the promise of using his studio to rip and digitize all of Sound’s cassette tapes into CDs to re-release them online. The only issue with this however is that Sound granted Player 1 responsibility of the majority of his tapes, including unreleased material. And since DJ Sound was staying busy being a devoted family and businessman. He could not keep up with what Player 1 was trying to do. And eventually it evolved into Player 1 taking full control over the already-dead DJ Sound Productions brand and the Frayser Click name in 2005. He did this by creating his own Frasyer Click website. Which specialized in rereleasing all of Sound’s old catalog. As well as putting out new released from artists like Tango and Lil Peaches.
Player 1 went so far with his plan in fact that he had created multiple brand new albums using decade old songs. Songs & names that he of course had no rights to own or distribute. Obviously this was against Sound’s word. But since it payed the bills and no one else was putting this old material out. Player 1 saw surely no issue with doing this. He would start advertising himself online as DJ Sound and would answer questions on Youtube as if he was DJ Sound. Player 1 would continue to do this all the way up until the website was officially disconnected around 2021. When he presumably stopped paying the bill to host the site. It got so bad with his impersonation that he eventually went ahead and created his own version of the unreleased DJ Sound Volume 12 in 2012. And released the album on streaming as if it was actually endorsed by DJ Sound. Featuring a brand new album cover & everything. He would eventually release at least 5 more unoffcial volumes stretching all the way to about Volume 18. Meaning Volumes 12-18 are all unofficial.
Player 1 would only start to slow this behavior once DJ Sound did his first public interview on the internet with Z-Dogg & DJ Zirk on the Mr.Zee’s Youtube channel in 2019. In it, Sound basically outed Player One as nothing more than a scammer. And Sound let all of his devoted know that the last original material he officially dropped was DJ Sound Volume 11 Broken Halo way back in 1996. While this is definitely a bad look for Player One. It is still perhaps the most interesting aspect of the entire Frayser Click story. However you feel about the man. Player 1 was keeping not only the DJ Sound name alive. But in a sense, he also helped revitalize the Memphis Rap scene online, through his website and countless bootlegs of other Memphis artists. At a time when it was nearly all but dead. Player 1 will still make an online appearance once every blue moon and maybe sell a tape or two. I even bought some of his last batch of tapes on Etsy in 2022. DJ Sound on the other hand has continuously stated that he will be rereleasing his old catalog soon. In addition to recording new music for modern artists. Whether he ever drops again or decides to call it quits. DJ Sound will still remain an underground legend for the rest of time.
