Don’t trust anything with this stamp on it 🤣 Old a Don’t trust anything with this stamp on it 🤣 Old ass nigga took down my 3 Youtube channels, Website, Untitled Archive, and my Instagram posts 🤣 Imma keep uploading even it musty niggas get mad about it @suncitypublishing
Southside Hustlers (1994) Rarely see this short ta Southside Hustlers (1994) Rarely see this short tape mentioned anywhere in the Memphis Rap scene. But it’s most definitely a classic and smooth G-funk style tape. With the outgoing money-making attitude of Memphis sprinkled in. Although it’s short I think the few tracks we do get are definitely classics 🔥 Although witj so may different tapes from so many different artists and groups, it’s understandable to know that a short-lived group like this was never going to reach the mainstream. I think it’s also important to note that this group worked with DJ Livewire and other producers locally before this as this wasn’t their first release❗️
DJ Paul - Volume 12 Part 2 (1993) Allegedly releas DJ Paul - Volume 12 Part 2 (1993) Allegedly released in August-September 1993. The conspiracy behind this album name says that Paul intended to release a Volume 13 on Friday the 13th August 1993. But allegedly it wasn’t ready by that point so he renamed it to volume 12 Part 2. This album came out when Paul was still dropping locally at places like Hillcrest High. It features some of the hottest rappers from that time period also with Skinny Pimp, MC Peaches & Queen Tanniece. Who were a female rap duo considered the first queens of Memphis 🔥 This volume and all the other DJ Paul volumes we have still hit hard to this day. And as of 3/6/26. Paul is still dropping new albums today❗️
Tela Tapes (1997-2002) Another overlooked artist f Tela Tapes (1997-2002) Another overlooked artist from Memphis is Tela. He got his start with 2nd Level back around 1990. Before signing to Rap A Lot in the mid 90s and releasing multiple solo albums which garnered some praise nationwide although was never as popular as Three 6 or 8Ball & MJG. His storytelling lyrics and funky beats definitely hold up years later 🔥
DJ Spanish Fly tapes (1991-1998) The godfather of DJ Spanish Fly tapes (1991-1998) The godfather of Memphis Rap is none other than the legend DJ Spanish Fly. Getting his start in the late 1980s, he essentially pioneered the Memphis rap sound with songs like “Gansta Walk” & “Smokin’ Onion”. His Oh Word mixtape series were a sensation in the city and made Spanish Fly the first underground independent rap artist from Memphis. Fly has always had his own style and still kept this style throughout the entire 1990s and 2000s. Today he is looked at as a pioneer in the music industry for his contributions to Memphis Rap in its earliest developmental stages.
Young Lo tapes (1996) A real true OG from the Memp Young Lo tapes (1996) A real true OG from the Memphis Rap scene would be none other than Young Lo❗️Lo is often credited as being the first independent artist who had his tapes in stores around 1991. His first release 7th Street Bound is a classic song and helped develop the Memphis scene early on. By the time Lo developed into his own on these two releases, he mastered his storytelling lyrics. And also had some immaculate production underneath his smooth delivery and Playa rhymes 🔥
DJ Zirk - 2 Thick (1993) Possibly the one tape fro DJ Zirk - 2 Thick (1993) Possibly the one tape from me that does not need any kind of introduction. This tape is essentially a 30 minute diss track towards DJ Paul, Juicy J & Skinny Pimp. This release in my opinion is the most influential release from the entire Memphis Rap scene. As the sounds Zirk would choose to use on the songs would be heavily sampled from for years to come in the local scene. With “Lock ‘Em In The Truck” & “2 Thick” being two huge hits locally 🔥
Lil Mac & DJ Trick - Makin’ Love To Money (1995) A Lil Mac & DJ Trick - Makin’ Love To Money (1995) A Tennessee down south classic tape that I rarely see mentioned anywhere. In fact I feel like I may be the only big fan of this release. Regardless, DJ Trick is legend from around Humboldt, TN. His smooth old school production style is definitely on display in this release 🔥 This tape is severely underrated in my opinion. And is a classic that I have never forgotten about. As I still continue to play this junt many years later❗️
Player 1 Tapes (1994-2017) with how much this comm Player 1 Tapes (1994-2017) with how much this community often shits on people like Priest AKA Player 1. I want to take the time to show my personal appreciation for Player 1 myself. Being a founding member of the Frayser Click with DJ Sound. Player 1 has been rapping for an extremely long time. With his first recordings dating back to 1987 at the Trezvant High School talent show 🔥 The reason why so many people find issues with Priest. Is because he seemingly manipulated DJ Sound to make money off his albums through merchandise & represses. In my opinion though, I think this action essentially brought DJ Sound’s name to the underground rap world. Since Sound’s older work, was previously unheard until Player 1 put them out throughout the 2000s. Regardless of your opinion you can’t change the contributions that he provided for music & Memphis Rap as a whole 💯
8Ball & MJG - Lyrics of a Pimp (1992-1997) The ori 8Ball & MJG - Lyrics of a Pimp (1992-1997) The original song that certified 8Ball & MJG as prominent Southern artists was “Listen To The Lyrics” AKA “Lyrics of A Pimp”. The 1991 single was a hit locally and immediately gave the duo some fame in the city. They would of course go on to be one of the most legendary duos in hip hop history. But that song was the one that set them up later. They would rerelease this song and many of their other underground classics on the 1997 reissue 🔥 whichever version you bump, the Memphis pimp culture is strong in their lyrics. And the smoothness of it all still holds up incredibly well even today 💯
DJ Paul & Lord Infamous - Come With Me To Hell Tap DJ Paul & Lord Infamous - Come With Me To Hell Tapes (1994-1995) These two early Three Six Mafia albums in my opinion are the epitome of that Memphis horror sound. Both tapes are basically solo albums for Lord Infamous produced by DJ Paul. These two tapes helped pioneer and develop the dark gritty sound that Memphis became known for🔥 which of these two classics is your favorite??
Radical T - Radical But Critical (1991) An underra Radical T - Radical But Critical (1991) An underrated early Memphis classic I rarely see this release mentioned anywhere online. However its old school funky flavor and hip-hop style makes it extremely unique for Memphis ❗️And of course the early collaborations from legends like Psycho, DJ Zirk & 8Ball make this tape even more of a classic 🔥
DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) B.K. needs & deserves mu DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) B.K. needs & deserves much more credit than what he receives❗️At the start of the Memphis Rap tape scene there were only two DJ’s who were dropping local Mixtapes. With those two of course being: DJ Spanish Fly & DJ B.K. While B.K. Relied more on mixes, break beat, & West Coast tracks. Both his influence on the scene and skills on the turntables cannot go overlooked 🔥 Although he mainly retired from the scene right when it was heating up in 1993. I still play tons of his old school mixtapes. Despite the majority of which being “lost” to time 💯
Legion of Da Lost - Southern Destruction (1999) Th Legion of Da Lost - Southern Destruction (1999) This is a release which I rarely if ever see or hear get mentioned anywhere online. Legion of Da Lost was a very short-lived group which existed only for this one release in 1999. Formed by members of other groups like Ms. Krazy 🕊️ of COTC & Mac Shun of Riverside Click, who also most likely produced the release 🔥. Although I really never see this junt get mentioned anywhere. I still love it for what it is. And perhaps I love it a little bit more just because of that fact 💯
Hilltop Hustlaz - Mac A Fee (1998) Once again anot Hilltop Hustlaz - Mac A Fee (1998) Once again another very obscure and forgotten about release from an underrated group in Memphis. By the year 1997-1998 the newer generation of young rappers would emerge inspired but the sound of Squeeky and DJ Paul from years prior. While these releases are often more overlooked compared to the 93-96 tapes. I think their more polished production and sound is much more appealing than many others in the scene❗️This tape is still one of my favorite underground tapes. Because of it’s atmospheric synths and catchy hooks 🔥
Black Market Empire Tapes (1994-1995) While I can’ Black Market Empire Tapes (1994-1995) While I can’t confidently pinpoint an exact year for these two releases it was most likely released sometime between 1994-1996. With group members and extra collaborators being Hard D, Flex (maybe DJ Flex), Mastermind Mick, & Rockmaster Rick who likely produced most of their songs with 1-2 other producers 🔥 While I definitely don’t know much about these releases or the group itself. I do know that I love both of these albums, despite them rarely ever getting mentioned 💯
The Family - kickin’ It About The Bricks (1996) An The Family - kickin’ It About The Bricks (1996) Another forgotten about group went simply by the name The Family. They hailed from Blackhaven and had only one release from 1996. While I love this release, the quality online is less than ideal 💯 this is another release that I can’t wait to rip soon 🔥
Destion - Light Years Ahead of Ya (1998) With how Destion - Light Years Ahead of Ya (1998) With how revolutionary the Memphis Rap sound was in the 90s it was almost inevitable for acts in other cities to follow this sound. Destion comes from Jackson, TN which was located close enough to Memphis for them to have a similar sound. While this tape is likely not an OG from 1990s Jackson, TN. I still love having this album on cassette 🔥
9 Tra Family (1995) Perhaps the best part about Me 9 Tra Family (1995) Perhaps the best part about Memphis Rap is the variety of different groups there were❗️From Three Six Mafia to Butcher shop and Frayser Click. Every neighborhood had at least one rap group it seemed like. 9 Tra family obviously must have formed some time in 1993 with some of their work presuming to be lost. The two tapes we do have are underground classics and still stand the test of time despite having little to no information on them 🔥
Shot Callers - Tryin To Make It (1997) While this Shot Callers - Tryin To Make It (1997) While this is yet again another tape from 1990s Tennessee. Instead of Memphis this group originates from Jackson, TN. Regardless of where they are from, this one and only release I can find from them is bumping 🔊 Again I don’t know much about this group. But all I know is that it sounds good when Its in my tape deck 🔥
DJ Squeeky Tapes (1992-1996) Once the Hip-Hop scen DJ Squeeky Tapes (1992-1996) Once the Hip-Hop scene in Memphis had been started by people like Spanish Fly. DJ Squeeky would be the first producer to capitalize off this emerging market. His tape mixtape series would gain traction in the city. And before you knew it Squeeky was producing for all the hottest artists in Memphis in the early-mid 90s 🔥 His revolutionary bass and unique sound would influence the entire genre and essentially opened the doors for many other producers in the city.
Tommy Wright III Tapes (1993-1996) TW is one name Tommy Wright III Tapes (1993-1996) TW is one name which has managed to stay relevant for over 30 years. While his underground cassette run in the 1990s was legendary. His popularity in recent years and sudden surge of concerts and performances is what makes TW even more legendary in my opinion 🔥 Not to mention that his 1996 run is one of the best ever single year runs in Memphis history. Such as DJ Paul in 1994. And DJ Squeeky in 1995.
K Rock The World (2000) K Rock is another artist f K Rock The World (2000) K Rock is another artist from Memphis who deserves much more praise in the rap scene. As a member of Prophet Posse in the late 90s. K-Rock would record many of his earliest songs with Three Six Mafia. Before leaving the group in about 1999. To sign with Nicky Scarfo Jackson who still owned the rights to the Prophet Posse name. This album would come immediately after that and is still his best in my opinion 🔥 unfortunately K rock would pass away in Prison in 2018. I can still remember the exact moment I hard the news in my 1st period Art class in High School. Rip to both Nick Scarfo and K Rock ❗️
DJ Sound Tapes (1992-2005) DJ Sound is most defini DJ Sound Tapes (1992-2005) DJ Sound is most definitely my favorite underground producer from Memphis❗️I first heard his music on an airplane trip when I downloaded a 2 hour compilation. Since that moment I have been an ultimate DJ Sound fan. I have nearly all his tapes and consider many of these some of the best from the genre🔥
MC Mack Tapes (1996-2000) one of my favorite rappe MC Mack Tapes (1996-2000) one of my favorite rappers from Memphis is without a doubt MC Mack❗️Although Mack is known to both produce & rap. His skills on the microphone has aged much better than many others his age. Mack gets my utmost respect for continuing to drop album after album, even in his 50s 🔥
Shawty Pimp Tapes (1994-1997) It took a long time Shawty Pimp Tapes (1994-1997) It took a long time for legendary producer & rapper Shawty Pimp to get the love he truly deserves ❗️When it comes to smooth, laid back, pimp beats. Shawty Pimp did it the best in the underground 💯 The best part about his catalog is that he dropped nearly 15 different tapes in the few years the underground was around🔥 Although his consistency would somewhat fall off. His music after this period was definitely still good and has been for over 30 years.
Project Pat Tapes (1994-2002) One of the most fami Project Pat Tapes (1994-2002) One of the most familiar names to ever come out of Memphis. Being blood brothers to Juicy J meant Pat became a member of the crew immediately ❗️Although he was locked up for more than half of his peak career. In retrospective, his style influenced many. And his music has lived longer than many others from the same era 🔥
196 Clique - Crucifix’s (1996) This album is often 196 Clique - Crucifix’s (1996) This album is often regarded as one of the hardest album covers from the Memphis Rap scene. Both the production and raps on it live up to the wild cover. Although the group released 2 more full albums after this. It was still hard for this album and the group to see success locally like DJ Paul or DJ Squeeky. With the advent of the internet however this group has still managed to live on❗️With “Crucifixes” being considered a classic in the underground 🔥
DJ Sound Volume 1-3,7-11 (1992-1996) Out of all pr DJ Sound Volume 1-3,7-11 (1992-1996) Out of all producers in Memphis dropping mixtapes. DJ Sound’s volumes were the best in my opinion. From about Volume 6-11, Sound was putting out hit after hit. But Volume 9-11 were truly some of his best work 🔥 I can still play any DJ Sound’s tape to this day and that Volume 9 will always be one of my favorites ever❗️
Happy 3️⃣/6️⃣ day❗️❗️Been some years since I last Happy 3️⃣/6️⃣ day❗️❗️Been some years since I last celebrated. Although I play their music almost everyday. Today lets all recognize the impact this legendary group had on music💪 And continue to listen to some of the greatest tracks ever made🔥
DJ Squeeky Volume 2-9 (1993-1995) At a time when e DJ Squeeky Volume 2-9 (1993-1995) At a time when everyone in the city had their own volumes. DJ Squeeky was leading the way for a short period. Some of the songs on these volumes would give Squeeky the career boost he needed for the next-decade. Songs like Lookin For The Chewin on Volume 4 have become some of the most popular songs from this era 🔥
Orange Juice Click tapes (1995-1997) Another group Orange Juice Click tapes (1995-1997) Another group I can mention which needs more attention and recognition❗️Chilly D was laying down heat for his crew Orange Juice. That Pimps, Macs, Hustlas, & Playas is still a classic to this day and never gets old 🔥 Some of their beats and sound concepts may sound a little wild but that’s part of what makes them who they are❗️
DJ Squeeky Bass Tapes (1993-1995) While Squeeky wa DJ Squeeky Bass Tapes (1993-1995) While Squeeky was dropping his volumes, summer mixes and solo albums for other people. He was also putting out his classic “bass tapes”. Which were instrumental and mix heavy tapes with an emphasis on the bass 🔊 These tapes hit hard on any system and are perfect for car stereos. Part 2 of his bass tapes is still considered lost. But the ones we do have all slap 🔥
SMK Tapes (1994-2000) Scratch Machine Killa, South SMK Tapes (1994-2000) Scratch Machine Killa, South Memphis King or SMK. Whatever you call him he definitely deserves more praise for being one of the first producers to have a unique sound in the city of Memphis🔥 In fact throughout his career he has had much success in the industry, working with many of the greats and creating tons of classics the entire time❗️
Criminal Manne - Tapes (1994-1996) Crim deserves m Criminal Manne - Tapes (1994-1996) Crim deserves more recognition and acknowledgment for the contributions he made to Rap back in the 90s and 2000s. Nowadays he is more known for being a movie director on the streaming site Tubi. However 30 years ago he was dropping some of the hardest tapes in the south along with the legend DJ Squeeky 🔥
Immortal Lowlifes Tapes (1996-1998) With so many g Immortal Lowlifes Tapes (1996-1998) With so many groups flooding the scene at the same time in Memphis. It’s hard to be unique and distinguish yourself. Mr. Sche definitely accomplished this with his group the Lowlifes as he provided very dark piano production and had in my opinion the best homemade covers for the time🔥
Tommy Wright III - Memphis Massacre (1992) These 2 Tommy Wright III - Memphis Massacre (1992) These 2 tapes are the first releases that underground legend @tommywrightda3rd put out way back in 1992. He was only in High School when he produced and recorded these. With the first one being in the style of old DJ mixtapes when he still went by DJ Tommy Wright. After that he dropped his first official album released locally called Memphis Massacre and the rest is history 🔥 Even though it may not sound as good today, you can still see where much of the foundation for cowbell hiphop beats came from❗️
DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) If you thought that Sque DJ B.K. Tapes (1991-1996) If you thought that Squeeky and Spanish Fly were dropping lots of tapes then go and check out DJ BK. He is one of the first people to have his tapes sold locally in the stores in the late 80s and early 90s. Recording a variety of different mixes from his DJ shows and other popular songs. BK mixtapes are very representative of mixtapes from that era and are somewhat stuck in that period because they use popular songs from the time. But it’s still cool to hear old classics organized in a mixtape fashion💯
DJ Squeeky - Summer Mix 1-3 (1993-1995) Back in th DJ Squeeky - Summer Mix 1-3 (1993-1995) Back in the day Squeeky never stopped dropping tapes❗️Whether it were his volumes, bass tapes or summer mixes Squeeky stayed dropping heat 🔥 His work ethic is one of the main reasons why he’s managed to last in the game so long, still developing his sound and making a killing doing so 💯
Lo Key - Solo Tape (1995) For those who have been Lo Key - Solo Tape (1995) For those who have been following for a while, I have talked about this tape numerous times over the years. It is a highly sought after tape and one of the staple releases from the scene. Particularly the song “On That Devilshit” is one that people love. I think any tape that MDB produced back then had some of the hardest drums and samples out of anyone period. This tape is no exception and while Lo key doesn’t have the rap skills of Lil Sixx or Sir Mike G, he does have an upbeat flow and some dark lyrics 🔥
Skinny Pimp & Gimisum Family Tapes (1993-1997) Ski Skinny Pimp & Gimisum Family Tapes (1993-1997) Skinny is somewhat of an unsung hero from the Southern rap scene. His contributions are largely overlooked compared to other artists. He brought a new unique flow, fire production and an awesome pimp persona. As well as a multitude of artists he brought with him who went on to have their own successful careers. People like Z-Dogg, Lil Gin, and even Yo Gotti. Skinny himself though can kill any kind of beat and did do for 10 years plus in his prime 🔥 he still drops a lot nowadays as welcand has held up better than many other artists from his era❗️
Lady B Tapes (1994) Possibly the first woman to dr Lady B Tapes (1994) Possibly the first woman to drop a tape in Memphis was Lady B in 1993-1994. Being married to rapper and producer Skinny Pimp, he recorded and produced her first album part 1. However sometime after this they would divorce and no longer be in communication. Skinny pimp however would go on to drop two more albums part 2 & 3 in 1994. But recorded himself imitating her style and using a voice pitch to make it sound like a girl rapping. He did this for two more album released in the underground and years later with the internet this discovery would become apparent 🤣 Skinny Pimp was just such a hustler he was still making money off her without needing her at all 😂 Regardless of these tapes conception the production and style still slap today ❗️🔥
Dirty Red & Lil Bay Tapes (1995) I have been wait Dirty Red & Lil Bay Tapes (1995) I have been waiting to mention Tryin To Get In and Dirty Red & Bay ❗️These two were the first big rappers out the Memphis Frayser area, much due to their producer DJ Sound. As they already made a name on DJ Sounds volume 4-9 before they ever dropped their own tapes. They had also begun to learn from DJ Sound and started producing their own music, which is what the album “Tryin To Get In” was. They would go on to create their own rap group after these tapes called the Luciano Crime Family in 1998🔥 The production skills they learned from Sound helped them produce @yogotti first major rap album in 2000. Essentially starting the career of one of rap’s few multi- Millionaires ❗️❗️
Three Six Mafia Mystic Stylez (1995-2001) The firs Three Six Mafia Mystic Stylez (1995-2001) The first officially released Three Six Mafia album from 1995 is still as good now as it was 30 years ago❗️The dark production and atmosphere was the ultimate culmination of their work up to this point. And with features from people like Playa Fly and La Chat this album will forever be considered a classic southern album🔥
DJ Flexx Tapes (1995-1997) Yet again another produ DJ Flexx Tapes (1995-1997) Yet again another producer from Memphis who is long forgotten about was DJ Flexx. He had some legendary studio sessions and recordings with some of the greatest from Orange Mound like Zirk, Squeeky, 8ball & MJG, Chilly D, and Killa B. Unfortunately however many of his tapes are still lost, unheard or rare. That’s why I appreciate the music we do have since good music is timeless🔥
DJ Zirk & 2 Thick Tapes (1993-1996) Zirk is defini DJ Zirk & 2 Thick Tapes (1993-1996) Zirk is definitely one of the hardest out the scene for good reason. He can be credited as one of the first laying down dope tracks in the city and making a name using dark sounding beats. Imo I feel like Zirk is the reason why the Memphis Underground scene became so fixated on dark topics and beats 💯 His hard-hitting drums and slowed down samples provided the inspiration for a whole generation. On top of the raw lyrics about what he’ll do to people like DJ Paul for stealing his sound which is “lock em in da trunk” 👀🔥
Lil Yo - Youngsta’s On A Come Up (1996) This local Lil Yo - Youngsta’s On A Come Up (1996) This local release would be the start of a long illustrious career in the music business by Yo Gotti. By 16 he was already known for featuring on DJ Sound’s album and was an official member of the Frayser Click. When he decided to drop his first solo album in 1996 🔥 obviously cool to see how far he has come❗️ since he’s now one of the richest in the rap game
DJ Squeeky - Volume 4 (1993) This Is the original DJ Squeeky - Volume 4 (1993) This Is the original tape that helped get DJ Squeeky’s name out there in the city. Because a song on this tape called “Looking For The Chewin” would go on to be extremely popular locally. He had a ton of artists he was working with during this period like Al Kapone, Skinny Pimp, Eightball & MJG, and R.A.N 🔥 Squeeky would go on to be a prominent figure in the scene and this tape is what helped start his ongoing legacy continuing today 💪
DJ Sir Swift Tapes (1994-1997) Yet again another p DJ Sir Swift Tapes (1994-1997) Yet again another producer and DJ from the underground scene that is largely forgotten about. Sir Swift was working with people like Sound and Livewire in their early days as well, often doing collabs with the Frayser Click. I don’t hear much people talk about Sir Swift but his Vol. 12 is still a Trunk classic imo 🔊 it’s also cool to see a cassette tape release of his Memphis Murder Mix #3 🔥
Lil Maniyak & Lil T (1997-1998) The whole SLV-GHG Lil Maniyak & Lil T (1997-1998) The whole SLV-GHG click and their tapes sounds like they were recorded by middle schoolers skipping class 🤣 They are awesome for that reason imo and the Mortal Kombat sounding production from DJ Killa Karl is super unique itself and Karl himself is also overlooked. Lil T is unique however because it was never mixed properly and everything peaks on the songs causing distortion to every track 💀 Cool history nonetheless and this click has a ton more classic songs not on these two tapes 🔥
