Recorded in Knoxville, Tennessee during late 1995 and early 1996, Tha Vault is the only known full-length release from the Gin U Wine Clique and offers a rare look into East Tennessee’s underground rap scene during the same era that Memphis rap was flourishing. According to members of the group, the project was recorded in roughly one month while working in the studio four days a week, with Baby Boy serving as the group’s primary producer. The collective consisted of Mr. Ike, Baby Boy, Big Baby, Skinny J, DJ Fly S, DJ Assassin, K.M.G., OG Chill, G Black, Chat Daddy, V.S, Pooh, Lil Nugget, J Cool, Bookie and the group’s featured singer Jadiyah, who is also Skinny J’s sister. Chat Daddy, one of the group’s standout rappers, hailed from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Spanning nearly two hours, Tha Vault blends Southern funk, G-funk influences, street rap, and melodic R&B, making it one of the most ambitious independent Tennessee rap releases of the mid-1990s.
