Dirty Red & Lil Bay – Tryin’ To Get In (1995)

Released in late 1995 following DJ Sound – Volume #10 Hatred, Tryin’ To Get In marks a major turning point for Dirty Red & Lil Bay as they stepped out from under DJ Sound’s heavy production shadow and began crafting their own sound. After Dirty Red won a lawsuit against the Memphis Police Department, the duo invested into building their own studio, setting their sights on becoming fully independent artists and producers within the underground scene. The result is a raw, self-driven project that reflects both their hunger and the shifting power dynamics within the Frayser movement during the mid-90s. The tape keeps the dark Ridgecrest energy fans expected but leans more into stripped-down production and personal storytelling, showing early signs of their evolution beyond the DJ Sound camp. Tracks like “Pop In Them Clips” and “I’m Just A Hustler” capture the gritty street realism of the era, while appearances from Bloody Bones, D Tha Unknown, and Lil Bari help anchor the project firmly within the North Memphis network. As a follow-up to the short promo cassette released earlier the same year, this full-length release stands as a key late-1995 underground statement from two artists determined to control their own direction.
