Just Gettin’ It On marked a major turning point in Playa Fly’s career, released November 3rd, 1995 as his first fully independent project after departing Three Six Mafia shortly after Mystic Stylez in May 1995. This tape also introduced his new identity as Playa Fly, leaving behind the Lil Fly name that had defined his earlier underground appearances. Stepping away from the Triple Six camp allowed him to experiment with a more personal and aggressive style, laying the foundation for the solo legacy he would build through the late 90s. The project captures a transitional moment in Memphis rap, still rooted in the dark, raw energy of the mid-90s cassette era while pushing toward Fly’s more lyrical and independent direction. With appearances from Bill Chill, Gangsta Blac, and a wide circle of underground artists. As well as immaculate futuristic sounding production from Talio. Just Gettin’ It On feels like both a declaration of independence and a response to the shifting alliances happening across the Memphis scene at the time. This particular cassette looks quite damaged but surprisingly plays completely fine in every deck I’ve ever played it in. It was allegedly discovered in the glove box of an abandoned car in Whitehaven in 2023. This tape and specifically “catch You Slippin'” Is a diss to Lil Jyule even though Fly was on Jyule’s debut album. Three Six Mafia and especially DJ Paul & Gangsta Boo are also dissed many times on this album.
